Triangles
A tool for three dimensional modelling
When the geologist gets all the data from the drilling into the 3D MicroStation design file, she is prepared to start the geological part of the job. With MicroStation's drawing facilities such as "Place Shape" or "Place Line String" it is easy to interpret rock units and mineralized areas. When this work is done for each profile, it is time to create a wire frame model of the ore body. Identifying each interpreted profile and activating guide lines between the profiles, it is easy for her to create an irregular and complex folded volume. Information from the rock quality mapping, including faults and other important interruptive discontinuities can be supplied to the model.

Triangles

Triangles is a program created for interactive modelling, analysis and presentation of rock masses in three dimensions. The wide range functionality of the software allows modelling of irregular volumes by triangulation between two or more complex shapes. These shapes can represent interpretation of geological structure from drill hole profiles, digitised shapes from geological mapping in different mine levels, and so forth.

While working with 3D modelling, it was previously difficult to see the result in a wireframe display. However, with MicroStation's photorealistic rendering capabilities it is possible to enhance the presentation of the triangulated model.

Triangulation can also be made between linear structures for modelling and illustration of complex fault systems. Folded structures are modelled by connection of fold hinges on one profile with corresponding points on other profiles. The connection is made by guide lines. These guide lines act as fold hinges in the model.

In order to separate different features in the design file the user is able to configure colours and graphical levels for the triangulation. That is also convenient when different models are to be presented.

Cross sections through the three dimensional volume can be created for further modelling or for detailed studies of particular parts of the model.
